Lapis lazuli, prized for its rich blue colour, is a rare semi-precious stone that has been mined from mines in the Badakhshan province of Afghanistan for over 6,000 years. Emily allows the head to emerge from the rough form, careful to leave uncarved the ancient geological 'landscape' from which it emerges.
